For managing pain in the calcinosis deposit area associated with dermatomyositis, there are some topical treatments (creams) that might provide relief, though they won’t remove the calcium deposits themselves. Here are some options you can discuss with your doctor: 1. Topical Pain Relief Creams Lidocaine Cream or Gel: A topical anesthetic like lidocaine can help numb the area and reduce localized pain. Capsaicin Cream: This cream can help reduce pain by desensitizing pain receptors, although it may cause initial burning sensations. NSAID Creams (e.g., Diclofenac Gel): This helps reduce inflammation and pain at the site of the calcinosis deposits. 2. Steroid Creams Corticosteroid Creams (e.g., Hydrocortisone): These can help reduce inflammation around the deposits, though they may not directly affect the calcium buildup itself. 3. Moisturizing Creams with Urea or Lactic Acid Urea-based Creams: These help soften the skin and may improve comfort, though they won’t dissolve the calcium deposits. Emollients with Lactic Acid: These may help in softening hardened areas of the skin affected by calcinosis. 4. Prescription Topical Medications In some cases, your doctor may prescribe topical sodium thiosulfate, which is used for calcinosis but is generally applied under medical supervision. Since calcinosis cutis and dermatomyositis are complex conditions, it’s important to consult with your doctor to ensure the cream you choose is appropriate for your specific case. They may also suggest other treatments, like systemic medications, to address the underlying cause.
